Choosing the right care provider is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your pregnancy—and especially if you're planning a natural birth. The right provider doesn’t just “allow” natural birth—they support, encourage, and believe in your ability to do it.
In this post, we’ll explore what makes a provider truly natural birth-friendly, the types of providers available, the most important questions to ask during interviews, and red flags that might tell you to keep looking.

Birth is not just a medical event—it’s a deeply personal, emotional, and physical experience. When you choose a provider who aligns with your philosophy of birth, you’re far more likely to feel confident, respected, and empowered throughout the process.
On the flip side, a provider who doesn't align with your vision can undermine your confidence, subtly pressure you toward interventions, or create unnecessary fear. That’s why it’s so important to choose someone who sees birth not as a problem to manage—but as a physiological process to support.
1. They Believe in Your Body
You want a provider who genuinely trusts the natural process of birth—not one who tolerates your plan but secretly hopes you’ll change your mind. Ask them how they view unmedicated birth. Do they light up when talking about it? Do they express confidence in your body’s ability to give birth?
2. They Listen More Than They Talk
A natural birth-friendly provider takes the time to get to know you—your values, your fears, your hopes. They’re not just checking boxes or rushing through appointments. You should feel heard, respected, and safe to express your preferences.
3. They Have Experience Supporting Natural Birth
Ask how often they attend natural births. Are they familiar with upright positions, water birth, delayed cord clamping, or intermittent fetal monitoring? Have they worked collaboratively with midwives and doulas? Experience matters.
4. They Invite Your Questions
A great provider welcomes your curiosity. They won’t shame or bully you for asking questions, choosing alternatives, or exploring evidence-based options. You should leave your appointments feeling more informed—not more confused.
5. They Support Your Autonomy
Your provider should see you as the decision-maker. They offer guidance, not ultimatums. They honor informed choice—even when your decisions don’t follow the mainstream script.

Here’s a quick overview of your options—each with different philosophies and approaches to birth:
Don't be afraid to “interview” your provider—it’s your right. Here are some helpful questions:
Sometimes the signs are subtle—sometimes they’re obvious. Either way, trust your instincts. Red flags may include:
🚩 They say things like “We’ll see how you do” or “Most women get the epidural eventually.”
🚩 They seem uncomfortable with doulas or birth support people.
🚩 They seem irritated when you ask questions.
🚩 They can't speak to the care the rest of their team will provide.
🚩 They avoid discussing your birth plan.
🚩 They pressure you toward induction or interventions “just in case,” without clear evidence -based medical reasons.
🚩 They rely heavily on fear-based statistics instead of informed choice.
🚩 They use fear based language instead of empowering language.
🚩 You feel uneasy or unheard when you leave your appointments.
You don’t need to convince someone to respect you. If you feel uneasy, it’s okay to switch providers—even late in pregnancy.
